4 Steps to Craft a Custom Headboard

Updated: Nov 26, 2023

Custom headboards are all the rage in modern design. Gone are the days of plain wood or linen, and here instead are headboards with shelves, lighting, side tables, charge ports, and more! In fact, headboards are so customizable, there are very few things you can’t have in yours.

How to Create Your Own Custom Headboard

You’ve got a lot of options when it comes to picking a headboard. Materials, colors, styles, designs… but did you know you can add functionality into that mix? When you custom design your own headboard, the sky’s the limit! Here are some nifty ideas for crafting your own custom headboard.

Choose your style

First things first, figure out the style of your headboard. You probably want it to fit the style and color scheme of your room; in other words, you probably don’t want to bring a sleek, dark modern piece into a rustic or beachy room, right? So consider whether you want something simple or extravagant, elegant or rustic, highly designed or a little more laid back. Remember, you can add customization to any style!

Consider materials

Nowadays, headboards can be made out of just about anything, from weathered wood to linen to textiles, recycled materials, and more. Obviously, certain materials may work better with certain styles of decor, but it’s okay to get a little creative!

Add custom features

Before you start padding your headboard with nifty new updates, think about how you actually use your bed and your room. Newfangled features are nice, but if you don’t use them, they might end up being more in the way than in demand.

For example, do you read in bed? Custom lighting might be really handy. Do you charge your phone while you sleep? Add a charging port. Like to keep water beside your bed? Try a built-in bedside table. Does your dog like to cozy up with you? A pet ramp might prove convenient.

Just be sure to really think about what you want and need before you start designing!
